First Ever! Caste in Higher Education Conference
As the national civil rights movement for caste protections grows, CFA members are invited to the first national conference on caste in higher education.
Held October 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., via Zoom, the Caste in Higher Education Conference “is a resource for college and university personnel to increase knowledge of caste, and gain resources on how to support caste oppressed students, staff, and faculty across higher education,” according to organizers.
This conference features renowned and leading student activists, academics, community organizers, union members, higher education staff and administrators, and civil rights leaders on building caste equity across colleges, universities, and other higher education settings. See the conference schedule.
“This conference is timely and much needed. It will provide resources to develop comprehensive strategies focused on preventing and remedying caste-based discrimination and violence in higher education institutions,” said Vang Vang, CFA treasurer, co-chair of CFA’s APIDA Caucus, and Fresno State librarian. CFA is co-sponsoring the event.
The conference will also feature a historic keynote conversation between Dr. Cornel West, philosopher, political activist, and social critic, and Thenmozhi Soundararajan, a Dalit American artist, community organizer, and executive director of Equality Labs.
Equality Labs was a partner with CFA in advocating for achieving the addition of caste to the list of categories protected from discrimination at the California State University.
