Election Officials Continue to Count November 8 Ballots

In what has come to be an anti-climactic routine, Election Day has come and gone with many races too close to call. 

As election agencies expand access to voting by extending voter registration deadlines and mailing ballots to all voters, we must wait a few extra days for results while election workers count all votes.

“On Election Night, we will have a good picture of most contests, but the outcomes of close contests may take days or weeks to know the final results. This is normal. By law, county election officials have 30 days to count every valid ballot and conduct a post-election audit,” Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber said on Election Day. “California elections officials prioritize the right to vote and election security over rushing the vote count. We have a process that by law ensures both voting rights and the integrity of elections, so I would call on all Californians to be patient.”

Preliminary results reveal that:

• Gov. Gavin Newsom appears to have won a second term.
• Proposition 1 to codify Californians’ access to abortions appears headed for victory.
• Proposition 28 for additional funding for K-12 art and music education appears on track for success.
• Proposition 31 appears to have enough support to ban flavored tobacco products.
• Propositions 26 and 27 to legalize sports betting seem headed for failure.
