SACRAMENTO — As we near the end of our statutory process, California Faculty Association members will rally with Teamsters members to demand a fair contract at the November 7 CSU Board of Trustees meeting in Long Beach.

CFA members across all 23 California State University campuses voted to support authorizing a strike in a 95 percent vote. In a 94 percent yes vote, Teamsters members also made it clear to management that they need to invest their money where it matters – the people and programs with direct impact on student learning and success – or there will be job actions, such as a strike.

Though CSU management has repeatedly claimed that they can’t pay for our demands, an independent external fiscal analysis shows otherwise.

Tony Thurmond, the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction will join us at the rally and participate in our strike-ready picket line, which begins at 6:30 a.m. Those rallying will show our collective effort by handing out leaflets and shouting chants that reflect our struggle and solidarity.

Along with Thurmond, over a dozen other elected officials and labor organizers will be speaking at the rally beginning at 10:30 a.m., including:

  • CFA President Charles Toombs and CFA Vice President Margarita Berta-Ávila
  • Jason Rabinowitz, Teamsters Local 2010 Secretary-Treasurer
  • Lorena Gonzalez, California Labor Federation Chief Officer

Our faculty, staff, and students understand what is at stake within the CSU system. Our proposals address systemic inequities and ever-increasing workload demands. What we have asked for is more than reasonable, achievable, and necessary in ensuring a quality education for our students.
