CFA Represented at Women's March Event

Over the weekend, CFA leadership joined the virtual stage alongside leading women activists, leaders, and public officials for the Women March Foundation’s virtual event, Onward to Equity. CFA Associate Vice President, North, Margarita Berta-Ávila and CFA Associate Vice President, Racial & Social Justice, South, Sharon Elise, and CFA LA Chapter Lecturers’ Representative Leda Ramos were panelists at the event, each speaking on the needs to move toward a more equitable society. During her panel on “Women, COVID, & Caregiving,” Dr. Berta-Ávila spoke on continued issues for caregivers at the CSU.

“The inequity of caregiving did not start with COVID,” said Berta-Ávila. “It only escalated it.”

Dr. Elise joined the event as a panelist on “Women in the Workforce” and said, “The California State University chancellor has a $600,000 salary and a housing allowance. Our students are the ones who need a housing allowance – not the chancellor.”

Ramos spoke on working with Women’s March on the Feminist Street Initiative, an idea on reclaiming histories for women.

“Dolores Huerta Square arose from the fact that over 60 years of organizing in the United States and Dolores Huerta doesn’t even have a street or a square named after her. We looked at the work she did with Cesar Chavez in the Boyle Heights neighborhood in the sixties and we realized we needed to claim that space,” said Ramos. “It really is addressing the invisibilization of women in public spaces.”
