Members Approve Tentative Agreement

After eight months of reopener bargaining and numerous job actions, including two sets of strikes, 76% of voting CFA members approved our Tentative Agreement (TA), according to results certified by the vote’s third-party administrator.

“We thank members for their solidarity, debate, and courage to press CSU management for better faculty working and student learning conditions, especially everyone who worked tirelessly organizing the successful strikes and joining the picket lines,” said CFA President Charles Toombs. “We look forward to working together to continue our advocacy for an equitable CSU. We have special gratitude to our students and sibling union members, as well as elected leaders and public education allies who joined our cause and showed up in favor of investing in our CSU.”

Thousands of members cast a ballot for a vote turnout that reflects a dynamic and vibrant democratic union. This TA provides two General Salary Increases totaling more than a 10% raise for all faculty within the next six months, raises the salary floor for our lowest-paid faculty, increases paid parental leave, acknowledges the need to improve students-to-counselor ratios, addresses workload relief, and addresses long-standing racial, social, and gender inequities. Once CSU Trustees approve the Tentative Agreement, its terms and conditions will take effect. Their next scheduled meeting is March 24-27. We have urged management to call a special Board of Trustee meeting to implement the needed contract terms sooner.  

“We will continue advocating against management’s self-defeating austerity policies, affordability and access for students, and combatting anti-Black racism to create campuses that serve all of us,” said Sharon Elise, CFA Associate Vice President of Racial & Social Justice, South, and CSU San Marcos Professor. “We know that some members had strong concerns about the process and questions about the result. We will only be successful if we’re working together to continue building a CSU that empowers students and provides work environments that support faculty and staff.”
