Support for labor unions has been growing since 2009, and labor movements have witnessed historic victories in the recent years.
“Workers around the world are rallying together on May 1 to protest and demonstrate around a wide range of labor issues. We’re showing up because we believe in the power of solidarity and demand racial and social justice for our workers,” said Margarita Berta-Avila, CFA Vice President and Sacramento State professor. “We are fighting to call attention to the longstanding problems of inequity and indignity that workers receive on a day-to-day basis. But it’s a day worth celebrating too. When we are united, we can bring forth justice and create a world that is fair and representative of the diversity of our workers.”
From rallies to parties, festivals to dances, May Day will serve as a vehicle for many events around the world.
CFA members in Chico will hold an event to raise awareness about the graduate workers at Boston University who are heading into their fifth week of strike actions.
In Sacramento, our members plan to attend a lively street mural community action at the California State Capitol.
For those in Los Angeles, a rally organized by the LA May Day Coalition will be held on Sunset Boulevard to address issues concerning housing, citizenship, and a ceasefire in Gaza.
If you are located in the Bay Area, consider joining workers outside the Salesforce Tower in the South of Market district in downtown San Francisco, where SEIU Local 87 and Unite Here Local 2 will kick off their contract campaigns for Justice for Janitors and Hotel Workers.
The San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council will host a march from Bayfront Park to the San Diego Civic Center.
If you’re in San Jose, consider joining cultural performances and a march that begins at Roosevelt Park.
Anyone in the Inland Empire can join the May Day rally in Fontana.
