While the races at the top of the ballot have been receiving non-stop media attention, this election also has incredibly high stakes for local and state-level races that will deeply impact the lives of students, our colleagues, their families, and their communities.

“I have felt compelled to get involved with canvassing, precinct walking, and phone banking this election season to support local candidates who defend and amplify labor rights and advance social and racial justice goals, such as Sade Elhawary, a fierce community organizer and educator running to represent Assembly District 57 in historic South Los Angeles,” said Lily House-Peters, CFA Long Beach Vice President of Tenure/Tenure-Track Faculty and CSU Long Beach Assistant Professor. “We also have key issues related to affordable housing, rent control, mental health and addiction treatment, homelessness prevention, constitutional protection for gay marriage, statewide minimum wage, and climate action funding on the ballot this election!”

Thank you to those who have already voted and volunteered! We are sincerely grateful for your commitment to our students and our shared vision for the CSU system. Getting involved isn’t just about getting pro-labor and social justice candidates; it’s also about building community.

For House-Peters, “Getting involved in local political action this election season has helped me feel empowered to make positive change in my community, strengthen connections to our union siblings and other labor and social justice activists, and given me optimism and reasons to stay hopeful in the face of the difficult national election.”

Make sure you vote this year and remember to remind your fellow CFA members,  family, friends, neighbors, your colleagues, and students to vote, too.
