Sonoma State Faculty Senate Issues Unprecedented Vote of No Confidence in CSU Leadership
The Sonoma State University (SSU) Academic Senate has passed a resolution of no confidence in CSU Chancellor Mildred García, Interim President Emily Cutrer, and Provost Karen Moranski. This marks the first time a CSU campus senate has taken such action against the system’s top leadership.

The resolution, adopted on April 10, 2025, calls upon the CSU Board of Trustees to terminate the aforementioned administrators and appoint new leaders who align with the CSU’s mission of providing high-quality, accessible, and affordable education. The faculty cited a pattern of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and violations of shared governance as primary reasons for the vote.
Faculty members expressed deep concern over the administration’s reliance on external consulting firms, which have recommended austerity measures leading to significant layoffs and program cuts. Additionally, the unilateral pursuit of a multi-million-dollar AI initiative without faculty consultation has been criticized as emblematic of the administration’s disregard for collaborative decision-making.
The administration’s actions have already led to the elimination of six academic departments and 23 degree programs, affecting numerous faculty and students. These measures have sparked widespread protests, rallies, and legal challenges, with stakeholders demanding accountability and a reevaluation of the university’s direction.
The vote of no confidence underscores the urgent need for a leadership approach that prioritizes transparency, shared governance, and the well-being of the SSU community. As the situation unfolds, faculty, students, and staff continue to advocate for a more inclusive and sustainable future for Sonoma State University.
