Show Solidarity, Help Pass Student Loan Debt Cancellation

The time to cancel student debt is now.

Americans from across the country will participate in a day of action on Monday, April 4, demanding that President Joe Biden make good on a campaign promise and sign legislation cancelling student debt.

Debtors and allies will meet in Washington, D.C., to rally against the community suffering caused by student loan debt.

“We also know President Biden has the authority to fix it by picking up a pen and issuing an Executive Order to cancel all student loan debt. It’s a simple, effective way for him to add billions back into our economy, create jobs, narrow the racial wealth gap, and help everyone in our country, and it’d fulfill a campaign promise that so far he’s broken,” according to action organizers, the Debt Collective.

• Pass a resolution: See the template for faculty senates and the template for higher education locals.

• Take Your Debt to Work Day: wear red to work with your student debt amount or the average amount for people in your area, take a photo and post it to social media. Sign up to do this here!

• Hold a teach-in about student debt: Take a few minutes to have a conversation with students about student debt, who it burdens, its impacts, and what is to be done to eliminate it. See the template for a lesson plan.

• Share this video, “Your Debt is Someone Else’s Asset,” which reviews how debt from student loans, medical bills, and credit cards serves as a form of wealth transfer from struggling borrowers to the well-to-do that further entrenches white supremacy and power.
