The Biden Administration issued an executive order on June 4, 2024, along with an interim final rule that would enable the government to deny asylum to people who are seeking sanctuary in  the United States based on an arbitrary small numerical threshold. As a result of this and other immigration enforcement policies announced in May, and over the last year, thousands of people will be denied even a chance at asylum and be immediately deported.

CFA’s Immigration Task Force condemns this anti-immigrant and anti-refugee action by the Biden Administration.  We view families fleeing persecution, war and violence from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean islands as deserving of serious and thoughtful consideration for their asylum claims without the immediate threat of deportation. We support efforts to treat them with dignity and respect not as pawns in a political game.  CSU faculty, our students and their families, are also caught in the inhumane asylum process and broken immigration system, and we call for Congressional action to strengthen and expand our immigration system and provide adequate resources including hiring more asylum officers, immigration judges, and support staff throughout the system.
