CFA Members Tackle Structural Inequities for African Americans
For Black History Month, we want to remember, honor, respect, and appreciate the many extraordinary contributions made in our communities.
Black history is one of a continual struggle for rights, respect, and justice, and the ongoing work that we do as CFA members is leading the nation in addressing systemic racism and dismantling the structural inequities that exist for African Americans.
In our endeavor to redress the injustices committed against Black communities, we moved to support Assembly Bill 3121 when it was first introduced by Dr. Shirley Weber in February 2020. The bill establishes California’s first-ever task force to study and develop reparation proposals for African Americans to address the debilitating economic, educational, and health hardships they continue to suffer due to historical and structural racism.
The legislation was signed into law by Governor Newsom in September 2020.
After years of task force meetings, California became the first state to address Black reparations when the California Legislative Black Caucus introduced the 2024 Reparations Priority Bill Package. The bill package addresses education, civil rights, criminal justice reform, health, and business, and includes 14 measures that would give restitution to African Americans.
We will continue our efforts to move the state forward in rectifying structural racism. As more details of the bill package emerge, our members will evaluate whether it meets expectations that align with our anti-racism and social justice values.
