CFA statement on U.S. Supreme Court's Anti-Human Rights Decisions
CFA is outraged by the U.S. Supreme Court’s regressive rulings on affirmative action in college admissions, student loan debt cancellation, and LGBTQIA+ protections. These decisions make it more difficult for the Unites States to address and solve its decades of oppression of marginalized communities. If we don’t name it, we can’t tame it.
By allowing businesses to refuse services to same-sex couples, justices affirmed deliberate attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community and undermined fundamental human rights. CFA members join in solidarity with those engaged in the righteous fight against these rollbacks. LGBTQIA+ rights are workers’ rights are human rights.
Californians are familiar with the erosion of civil rights progress after the passage of Proposition 209 in 1996. We know the harm of banning affirmative action – fewer Black and brown students accessing education. This will impact generations of students of color across the U.S., just as Prop. 209 did in our state.
The Supreme Court also struck down President Biden’s proposal to cancel $10,000 to $20,000 in student loan debt. Though deeply disappointed, CFA members will continue to organize and fight for student debt cancellation and a tuition free CSU.
We call on President Biden to press forward on student debt forgiveness and for everyone to join the fight for fully funded quality public higher education for ALL Americans: https://secure.everyaction.com/1-s3aD1x2kaODnv4pHzyGA2
Affirmative action and student loan debt cancellation are proven solutions to close deep and pervasive racial equity gaps. Race shapes every life outcome, including access to higher education.
