CSU Administrators Need to Know Your Thoughts
CSU management is hiring high-priced consultants to put together a systemwide strategic plan. We see this as another case of management spending a fortune to look busy. CSU management claims they want to know our thoughts. We encourage CFA members to attend the November and December Town Halls on the strategic plan to share your views on the CSU’s future.
These sessions are an opportunity to share how criminalizing public discourse, rallies, and protests through the new “Time, Place and Manner” policy ignores that disruption has been a vital tool of civil resistance and progress in our society. These actions have included lunch counter sit-ins, “Freedom Rides” to desegregate buses, the 1963 March on Washington, anti-apartheid movements, Stonewall Riots, student protests at San Francisco State to establish Ethnic Studies, and Black Lives Matter rallies to protest police violence against communities of color.
The forums also are an opportunity to challenge CSU management’s manufactured austerity. We know that CSU management continues their decades of budget mismanagement and misuse of funds while claiming a tuition increase is necessary for their financial sustainability. Repeatedly there’s never any money to fairly compensate faculty and staff for their tireless dedication to student success and always a made-up budget hole to justify unfair costs to students.
We live with the consequences of their poor decision-making, and they supposedly want our input so now is the time to communicate truth to power.
