The Interrupting Racism: An Anti-Racism Workshop series centers race for the disruption of racialized hierarchies and narratives. This is a three-part workshop series with each part being 2.5-hours. Parts 1 and 2 are often combined for one 4-hour workshop.

Part 1
This workshop is highly interactive. We examine the pillars that hold up and perpetuate white supremacy and the way it feeds into the four types of racism. Through collaborative exercises where participants note significant historical events, we explore our nation’s history and normalized racism over multiple time periods. The definitions and exercises help reflect on the ways racism is established in our society historically, culturally, institutionally, individually, and interpersonally.

Part 2
Participants are asked to examine their own racial narrative and how it impacts them and others, especially people of color in the United States. We engage in small and large group discussion identifying racial narratives and counter racial narratives that shape how we show up in the workplace. Spending some time answering the self-examination questions that are sent in advance of the workshop enriches the conversation.

Part 3
In the third workshop of the Interruption Racism series, we focus on personal reflection to develop a plan for your anti-racism practice. We discuss campus scenarios and relate them to the definitions of the varieties of racism. Then we delve into the various stages of growth for an anti-racism practice.

In this 2.5-hour interactive workshop we reflect on several types of privileges as societally granted, unearned advantages that are systemic or structural. Through exercises and discussions, we uncover many faces of privilege (race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic levels, ableism, immigration, etc.), how they work, and why they perpetuate oppression. Together we brainstorm ways to dismantle systems of domination and oppression.

In this 2.5-hour workshop we dispel the current myths about CRT, understand its purpose and history, and examine the tenets that uphold our understanding of race, racism, social and economic justice. The scholarship on CRT informs educational research, civil rights, and social justice movements that ultimately helps us to reflect on needed lessons as educators and a union.

This 4-hour workshop is laser focused on helping participants become aware of their unconscious biases and preferences, and exploring micro-aggressions which interfere with the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty. In the safety of the workshop environment, participants will be encouraged to engage in open and respectful dialogue, identify their unconscious biases, and challenge those biases.

In advance of the workshop, participants are asked to take four Implicit Association Test (IAT), one on race, one on gender and two of their choosing at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html.  Test results should be printed for reference during the workshop.
