CFA leaders at State Capitol for swearing in of new Assembly, Senate

CFA president Lillian Taiz was at the Capitol on Monday as the newly elected state Assembly and Senate were sworn in to office.

There are 37 brand new members of the state legislature this year; a large number of “freshmen.”

Senate Democrats tackle need for more CSU, UC funding

Even as the ceremonies to form the new legislature were taking place, Senate Democrats were working on legislation to boost funding for the CSU and UC.

New Senate leader Kevin de Leon released statements on a bill authored by San Diego state Senator Marty Block that, among other provisions, would boost UC and CSU funding while holding in-state tuition at current levels.

Sac State students vote on new campus-based fee

Sacramento State students voted yesterday and today (Dec. 3) on whether to impose another campus-based fee (known technically as a Category II Fee).

Similar fees at other campuses have led to protests at CSU Trustees meetings and formation of a study committee by the Chancellor’s Office.

CFA representative heads to Pride at Work 20th anniversary

Scott Saarheim of the Maritime Academy is heading to Washington DC next week to represent CFA at the 20th Anniversary celebration of Pride at Work.

The anniversary will honor the founders of Pride at Work as well as soon-to-retire California Congressman George Miller, among others.

Pride at Work advocates for the rights of LGBT working people. CFA was specially invited, Saarheim points out, “because of the CFA LGBT caucus’s work on LGBT rights as workers and in higher education.”

Faculty Rights Tip of the Week: Sabbatical Leaves

Have you ever been denied a sabbatical leave because of the potential negative impact on your department?  

Article 27.6 of our new faculty contract guarantees that if you submit a sabbatical leave application in the following academic year it “shall not be denied based upon those same factors.”
