CFA African American Caucus Mission and Goals Statement

The African American Caucus is established under the auspices of the California Faculty Association. In accordance with Article 2 of the CFA Bylaws, the mission of the African American Caucus is to strengthen CFA by coalescing, representing and giving effective voice to CSU faculty of African descent within CFA.

Initial Goals

  1. Identify and activate a network of campus coordinators.
  2. Support and participate in the bi-annual CFA Equity Conferences
  3. Increase the participation of faculty of African descent in the Delegate Assemblies, Lobby Days, state budget, and re-opener bargaining issues.Long-term Goals

In fulfillment of its mission, the African American Caucus shall pursue the following goals and objectives:

  • Encourage and provide networking opportunities for external and internal interest groups.
  • Foster African American faculty membership, participation, and leadership at all levels of CFA, and, in so doing, build the union, promote and defend its mission, goals, and objectives, and support all of its campaigns. More broadly, champion diversity within CFA, along with others, to make it a better, more representative and stronger faculty union for the twenty-first century.
  • Promote an equitable representation of African American faculty within the CSU, as well as their inclusion, participation, and leadership at all levels of governance and university life. More broadly, champion diversity within the CSU, along with others, to make it fulfill its mission better and live up to its promise of access, equity, and quality education to the people of California.
  • Promote and defend all curricular, extra-curricular, and academic programs, reforms, and initiatives that seek to better educate CSU students about the history and current conditions of African Americans in the United States, including the many historic and current linkages to Africa, South and Latin America, and the Caribbean.• Mentor African American students, forge respectful, lasting relationships with their groups, and seek to include them in all African American Caucus activities and projects.
  • Actively promote cooperative and mutually supportive relations with African American staff on each CSU campus, and seek to include them in African American Caucus activities and projects.• Develop working relationships with the CSU central and campus administrations, the academic senates, the staff unions, and the student governments to promote and achieve all CSU related African American Caucus goals and objectives.
  • Actively promote cooperative and mutually supportive relations with the local communities that our CSU campuses serve, especially African American community organizations.• Foster respectful, cooperative, and solidarity relations with African American labor, educational, cultural, and political leaders and organizations locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.
  • Provide electronic means for all African American faculty members in the CSU to communicate and exchange data and analysis on all issues of interest to African Americans, especially those that pertain to the evolving status of African Americans in the CSU and information regarding all African American Caucus and CFA public declarations, activities, and projects.
