Responding to Intimidation Tactics
We are seeing an unprecedented outpouring of support for academic freedom and free speech across the CSU and higher education. Thousands are making their voices heard by signing petitions and protesting at rallies. Solidarity is how we keep each other safe during these difficult times. We also understand that recent events and headlines are having a chilling effect on our movement towards racial and social justice. Our experiences and history have taught us how to resist and overcome authoritarian regimes—we will continue to protest and make noise so that our issues are visible.
CFA will be present at any disciplinary meetings and continue to organize against any attack on our rights. If any faculty member feels that they are being targeted, investigated, or doxxed in relation to their political expression, national origin, race, immigration status, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, or having their academic freedom or right to free speech infringed upon, we are prepared and ready to advocate.
Some of the rights and liberties at stake go beyond what can be taken up as a labor matter through our usual union work of grievance filing, discipline appeals, and meeting and conferring over policy and contract changes. Therefore, we courage you to assess your risks factors and if you plan to take an action that may lead to criminal charges, you need to seek a criminal defense attorney. Likewise, for potential immigration issues, you need to seek an immigration attorney.
We are not alone. If you have concerns about taking part in a protest or collective action, please reach out to your chapter leadership or CFA field representative.
