Teacher Education Caucus

Theresa Montaño an associate professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State University Northridge. As a professor at Cal State Northridge, she teaches courses to teacher candidates in the area of Equity and Diversity in School, Chicano/a Childhood and Adolescence, and research in Chicano/a education.

An active unionist, Montaño joined the staff of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), where she worked as an area representative and professional development specialist for nine years.

Before accepting a position at California State University Northridge, Montaño was faculty advisor and instructor in UCLA’s Teacher Education Program. From 2000-02, she served as co-director of UCLA’s TeachLA program, a union-district-university collaborative in Los Angeles. Montaño’s research is in the schooling of Chicano/a-Latino/a students; Critical pedagogy; teacher activism; and Bilingual/ELL instruction.

Montaño previously served for six years as an National Education Association board director. Her many years of experience as a middle and high school teacher in Los Angeles and Denver, Colo., give her a special understanding of issues facing educators in California’s public schools.
